Spherical space (2015-2016)
The performance was part of Mirva Mäkinen’s research for her doctoral dissertation at The Performing Arts Research Centre in the University of the Arts Helsinki. The subject of Mäkinen’s dissertation is contact improvisation. Spherical pace examined the significance of speed in the aesthetics of contact improvisation.
The central theme of Spherical space was communication between performers and their relationship with space. The speed enabled the performer to let go of control, yet still maintain connection to other people in the space. The performance was premiered in Helsinki 2015 and was also played in Derry, Northern-Ireland 2016.
